Three Seconds to Shoot Down a Missile and Save Hundreds of Lives

In the face of the constant threat of rockets and missiles, the IDF has been at the forefront of developing and operating air defense systems.  What does it take to be an officer in this crucial field?
Imagine what an attack against Israel might look like in the not-too-distant future. In the opening salvo, a missile hits the heart of Tel Aviv, followed by precise rocket strikes on Israel from the Galilee to Eilat. Think this is an impossibility? Think again. Hezbollah alone has thousands of missilesaimed at major Israeli population centers. Their missiles can reach every single part of the country.

With this scenario on the horizon, it’s reassuring to know that Israel’s air defense system is poised and ready for every possible threat.
Not just anyone can serve as an air defense officer protecting Israeli civilians. Mastering this highly-pressured role requires professionalism, leadership, and character. “A commander needs to know not only how to deal with all the problems that may arise – he must also be able to help his soldiers handle these difficulties,” explained Lt. Col. Hadida, commander of the Air Defense Officer’s School.
Lt. Col. Hadida emphasized that “the path to becoming an officer is very fast. Within a year of drafting, cadets are already on their way to the officer’s course. We want to begin the process of developing officers as quickly as possible.”

No time to hesitate

Air defense relies on speed – being able to recognize a dangerous situation quickly and act on it. “The battle only lasts a few seconds and there no time to think and plan. Every officer needs to make decisions both quickly and calmly. Otherwise, the enemy will win,” says Lt. Col. Hadida. There’s a lot at stake: the system is the last buffer between a missile and Israel’s civilians.

The system has already proved its abilities to protect the Israeli Home Front. In November 2012, theHamas terrorist organization fired hundreds of missiles from Gaza at southern and Central Israel during Operation Pillar of Defense. The Iron Dome intercepted the vast majority of rockets in danger of striking populated areas, and earned its reputation as a remarkably efficient and effective life-saving defense system.
To live up to these standards, professional and motivated officers are key. “Air defense systems deployed on the border are constantly on alert,” said Lt. Col. Hadida. “Our batteries watch the skiesat all times. A commander’s ability to bring out the most [in his or her soldiers] – that’s what makes the difference.”

Gender equality

“I don’t feel any difference between me and the men, says Captain Rudnistki, an air defense officer. “We went through the same exact process. Woman are integrated very well into the system.”
“The female fighters who come are highly motivated,” says Lt. Col. Hadida. “Today, 15 percent of fighters and 30 percent of battery commanders are female. There is no glass ceiling; all options are open and this is just the beginning.”
Do you have what it takes to be an IDF air defense officer?
