Terror Attacks & Attempts That Didn’t Make the Headlines: Jan-Sept 2013


The Israel Defense Forces deals with terror on a daily basis. This year, an Israeli civilian was murdered as a result of terror, and many more were injured in attacks ranging from stabbings to rockets. There were over 20 attempts to hit Israeli civilians with rocket fire alone. These attacks seem small, and don’t normally make it to the news headlines. But they effect Israeli civilians every day. The IDF will continue to do everything in our power to prevent them.


Here are the 2013 terror attacks (and attempts) that didn’t make the headlines:

January 15: IDF Discovers Gaze-Made Tunnel With Exit in Israeli Territory
A potential kidnapping attempt was thwarted when during a routine patrol of the Gaza security fence, IDF soldiers discovered the exit of a tunnel dug from the Gaza Strip. The tunnel was large enough to carry people, and indicates a serious attempt by terrorist groups, led by Hamas, to attack Israeli civilians and soldiers. A similar tunnel was used in the kidnapping of Sgt. 1st Class Gilad Shalit.

January 27: IDF Thwarts Significant Terror Attack on Israeli Community
When IDF soldiers arrested two Palestinians after they hurled firebombs at an IDF post in Judea and Samaria, they discovered this letter on the scene. It was written by the Al-Aqsa Brigade, which declared intent to carry out a terror attack in Alon Moreh, a nearby Israeli community.

January 29: Israeli Civilian Stabbed by Terrorist, Injured Moderately
An Israeli civilian was stabbed by a Palestinian terrorist at the Tapuah Junction. The victim was injured moderately in the incident.

January 31: IDF & ISA Uncover Hamas Terrorist Assets in Hebron
In a joint operation, the IDF and ISA arrested approximately 20 terrorists affiliated with Hamas, and a cache of ammunition that included more than 10 different types of weapons. The group had been planning to kidnap an IDF soldier and use her or him as a bargaining chip for the release of Hamas prisoners. The operation took place over recent months and was announced on the 31st.

February 7:   Two Palestinians Indicted For Planning and Carrying Out A Shooting Attack On the Salem Military Camp
The IDF’s investigation found that the suspects, who traveled in a car driven by a third person, fired roughly 30 shots from two M-16 rifles. A number of these bullets struck the military base, some of them penetrating offices where soldiers were at the time.

March 14: Five Palestinians Attack Israeli Civilian Vehicles With Rocks Near the Israeli City of Ariel
The Palestinians responsible for the attack had hurled rocks at Israeli civilian vehicles traveling on a main road near Kifl Haris, striking several vehicles. As a result, a resident of the community of Yakir, who was traveling with three of her daughters, lost control of her vehicle and hit a truck. The driver and two of her daughters were moderately injured, and a third was critically injured.

March 28: Terror Network Arrested Near Bethlehem
Security forces arrested more than 30 operatives of the Tanzim-Fatah terror network who carried out a large number of shooting and firebomb attacks using improvised weapons against the Israeli town of Migdal Oz. Following investigations, the members of the network confessed to having carried out the attacks as well as having planned more shooting attacks in the Gush Etzion region. Their arrests prevented the operatives from executing their plans.

April 2: Rocket Fired From Gaza Lands in Southern Israel


An IAF aircraft targeted two extensive terror sites in the northern Gaza Strip overnight, in response to several incidents of rocket fire directed at Israel. Accurate strikes were identified.

April 13: IDF Forces Thwart Terror Attack at Crossing
A Palestinian man was arrested when he arrived at the Eliyahu crossing, armed with an improvised firearm, ammunition and a map of the crossing. He intended to commit a terror attack at the crossing, which services populations in transit between the Tel Aviv metropolitan area and the Qalqilya area.


April 25: UAV Attempted to Infiltrate Israeli Airspace
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attempted to violate Israeli airspace from the north. Israel Air Force aircraft intercepted the UAV and successfully downed the target five nautical miles off the coast of the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

April 28: Rocket Fired From Gaza Lands in Southern Israel
After rockets fired from Gaza hit Southern Israel once more, Israel Air Force aircraft targeted two terror sites in the Gaza Strip.

April 30: Palestinian Terrorist Murders Israeli Civilian
A Palestinian terrorist murdered an Israeli civilian at the Tapuah Junction and then attempted to steal the victim’s weapon. Security personnel in the area responded with fire, wounding the terrorist.


May 2: Palestinians Fire at Israeli Hikers
On May 2, Palestinians opened fire at Israeli hikers at Nahal Prat, near Mitzpe Yeriho, damaging an Israeli vehicle. Later in the month, The Israel Security Agency, in conjunction with the IDF and the Israel Police, uncovered and arrested a cell of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinebased in Hebron and Nablus. One of the cell’s terror operatives, Aid Assad Fahri Marka, was responsible for the terror attack against the hikers.


May: IDF Forces Seize Illegal Weapons and Military Equipment in Judea and Samaria
Over the course of the month, IDF forces seized rifles, improvised weapons, ammunition, knives, military helmets, a tactical vest and other military equipment, and arrested a series of terror suspects, during the course of routine operations in Judea and Samaria.
